Search Brazilian Pepper Tree Questions: Should I defoliate? Do you have any suggestions? I have a bonsai xanthoxylem pipieritum (Japanese pepper tree) which is called "pepper" is above all what it has in common with its turrebinthifolius corner. My answers are based on general plant physiological principles: For the process of dedifferentiation and differentiation of ambium cells, an accumulation of auxineth and photosynth is needed at the base of the stem. It requires a continuous supply of both to then grow roots, which basically means that photosynthesis should be in progress. The gas exchange through the stomata sheet is required to take carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, but it means that the water will be drawn in the air that has relative humidity less than 100% - more so, the air dryer. Yadda, yadda, yadda, you've seen what happens when you forget the water. I hope my answer doesn't offend! My hope was to pick up your brain a little more about the overall care of Brazilian peppers and how they respond to bonsai practices. At our last meeting of the club Steve Valentine was our guest host. He drove all the way to Vista to give us a fairly special presentation on this huge Brazilian pepper tree. For most people a pepper tree wouldn't be much, but the detail in this tree is quite amazing because of its unique characteristics. Yes, this is the same tree that Steve showed at the GSBF 2015 Convention in Riverside. A little overgrown, but the bones are still there. The reason Steve brought it for a refurbishment is because this year in a freak accident during a show an important branch broke in the car on the road to the exhibition area. This tree has grown specifically for bonsai. It was developed by a long-standing friend of Steve by the name of BJ Patterson of San Diego. Nebari tree and trunk is amazing. This tree was not classic bitten trunk, but slowly grew up with specific ground leaders for more than 30 years. The Brazilian Pepper tree is a small Brazilian (in terms of the small Amazon) evergreen tree or bush, Schinus terebinthifolius, of the family of the orange groves, with immeasurable white flowers and bright red fruit: the berries are commonly used for Christmas decorations. Even in our temperate conditions this small hard tree does not drop in the autumn/winter. Some of the challenges of this tree are that it has a composite leaf structure. It means that there is a main vein with several small leaves coming out of that venous structure vs a single leaf with a single vein. Most of the leafy trees are an aggressive grower and need to be cut consistently. In addition, the big branches take a little to heal completely. Here is an image of the structure of the bark. This tree will aggressively put adventurous buds of the old bark. Side note bark only a gift in this tree almost as a grey black pine in terms of crustiness. It was good to see that in terms of basic maintenance of bonsai, the Brazilian peppers fall almost like any deciduo tree. Let it grow and cut hard. The only real difference is where to cut into the structure of the blade to get the right backbudding and the pad building. So here's a sample branch that I ask Steve to quickly show me what he's doing to the whole tree cannon. So a Brazilian pepper tree is made up of a 7-fly leaflets. From that 7 pamphlet, Steve will usually select the last 2 leaves closest to the stem. It keeps cutting the structure of the branch in the same way. This type of trimming will give a more tightly considered branching in a relatively short amount of time. Go on through the branch. Repeat the same kind of cuts. Here is a good picture of the last 2 pamphlet in the branch structure. As you can know from this picture. The branch began as a lanky branch in a rather tightly padded structure with just a cut-off pass. Now can you imagine doing this every week? After our brief break, Steve changed his team on this great ficus. It's a client's tree that wasn't adding much. So, this year the trunk cut it from 5' to about 7". From this picture you cannot tell the good nebari this great ficus has. As he predicted that the ficus responded well and the back turned well. So Steve ended the night with this beauty. Yeah, it's a cork. But the story behind this elm makes it amazing. The father tree that this little man was killed was picked up by Bob Knox of San Diego. The original owner and collector, Bob Knox airlayered the top of the tree because it was not part of the final design of the collected tree. The crazy part is that the father tree is an ancient Chinese Elm. This potter section has a tiny leaf structure, the corked bark showing at a young age and the bark is crispy as the Brazilian Pepper. Steve was kind enough to donate one of these special elms in our club riff. Of course Farn was the lucky winner! Steve for the wonderful show of the night.
